The Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce (AVCC) is re-focusing efforts to improve Atwater's other commercial corridors, Los Feliz Blvd and Fletcher Dr. As a first step for this onging effort the AVCC is planning to create a community / graffiti abatement mural on the wall facing Brunswick Ave at the Los Feliz Car Wash (3013 Los Feliz Blvd). Such murals throughout Atwater Village have proven to be a major deterrent to graffiti.
The mural will encompass the entire span of the wall: 110 feet in length, 10 feet tall at one end and 5 feet tall at the other end. Located at a high-traffic entry point to North Atwater Village, the mural will celebrate its unique landmarks and history. The mural will contain images representing the history of Atwater’s equestrian and former agricultural areas, as well as images of the Los Angeles River, Union Pacific Railroad, Christo Rey Church, the former Chevy Chase elementary School and Franciscan Pottery factory.
AVCC has assembled a mural “dream team” to accomplish this project. Local historians, Sandra Caravella, Netty Carr and Ann Lawson from Friends of Atwater Village (FAV), will serve as volunteer consultants to maintain the historical integrity of the mural’s theme and images. AVCC has retained the services of muralist Rafael Escamilla, who will serve as lead artist. Rafael is a proven muralist and has already done other murals in Atwater Village, one of which is the “Revisit the Red Car” at the Red Car River Park (see list below for other murals done in Atwater Village by Rafael).
To help make this mural a reality we are asking the community for financial assistance. Please help fund this worthwhile project. Together we can eliminate blight and promote Atwater Village history.
